Amazon's CEO issued a corporate climate declaration: to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040.

  • 2019-11-14

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos, founder and CEO of Amazon and the world's richest man, issued a corporate climate pledge on the 19th to combat climate change. The pledge aims for companies to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, 10 years earlier than the Paris Agreement's target. To achieve this, Amazon must drastically reduce its carbon emissions. Bezos, as a leading figure, invited other companies to sign the pledge, and many internet technology companies are expected to follow suit. The ultimate goal of the Climate Pledge is for companies to achieve carbon neutrality by 2040, meaning that the carbon dioxide emissions from their operations must be absorbed through methods such as planting trees, ultimately resulting in zero carbon emissions. However, using renewable energy to fundamentally reduce carbon emissions is a more practical approach. Bezos declared that Amazon will regularly measure and report carbon emissions, implement carbon reduction policies, and offset existing carbon emissions. By 2024, Amazon aims to use 80% renewable energy; by 2030, it will use 100% renewable energy. Amazon currently uses 40% renewable energy, thanks to its 15 solar and wind power plants. Carbon reduction is not easy for this e-commerce giant, as warehousing and logistics infrastructure are essential, and its cloud storage services require numerous data centers and servers. However, Bezos has already planned how to prove he's a man of his word. Along with his climate declaration, he announced an order for 100,000 electric pickup trucks from startup Rivian, expected to join their delivery fleet starting in 2021. He also pledged $100 million to The Nature Conservancy to support reforestation efforts. Amazon had previously promised in February to release its carbon footprint data by the end of the year. At this press conference, Amazon also shared its carbon emissions calculation system and stated that it will hold a meeting to share its practices with companies committed to carbon reduction. A declaration won by Amazon employees? This climate declaration came somewhat unexpectedly, but not without reason. Over 1,500 employees formed the "Amazon Employees for Climate Justice" group, planning a joint strike on September 20th to urge the company to take action on climate change. The organization also echoed the UN Climate Action Summit to be held in New York on September 23rd. Bezos's choice to release the climate declaration the day before the strike can be seen as a response to the employees' demands. After seeing the CEO's climate declaration, "Amazon Employees for Climate Justice" tweeted, "A huge victory, but we know it's not enough," because the Paris Climate Agreement itself will not bring people a habitable environment; continued action by people will. However, Bezos did not directly address the specific demands of Amazon employees pursuing climate justice, such as "severing ties with oil-using companies" and "no longer investing in businesses or individuals who deny climate change issues." He only stated that he wanted to ensure everyone had access to the best tools during the transition, and that they would dedicate themselves to their contributions. (Source: TechNews, 2019/09/21)
