Abolition and turning stones into gold Qingda University Professor Ling Yongjian uses green chemistry to promote circular economy

  • 2021-11-18

The commercial launch of 5G is imminent. As tech giants release new 5G phones and countries rapidly deploy base stations, laying the groundwork for the next era of communications, the world must confront the environmental impact of communications chips. Gallium arsenide (Galium Arsenide) is a key contributor to the successful rollout of 5G communications. Gallium arsenide's material properties allow for faster electron movement, making it a key component of chips used in mobile phone power amplifiers (PAs). However, the arsenic in GaAs is a carcinogenic and environmentally harmful poison. Arsenic, a compound used in ancient killings, is a compound of GaAs, and blackfoot disease is also caused by arsenic-contaminated water. During the manufacturing process of communications wafers, if arsenic-containing wastewater or waste oil is not properly treated, the arsenic can enter groundwater systems through weathering and dissolution, causing pollution. In the communications era, addressing arsenic pollution has become a global priority. Ling Yongjian, a professor at the Department of Chemistry at Tsinghua University who has long been studying green chemical methods, has separated arsenic from waste cutting oil containing gallium arsenide through wet smelting[1]. The treated "non-toxic cutting oil" can be purified and turned into a raw material for the synthesis of "carbon quantum dot" in vivo imaging detection reagents. By turning waste oil into a product with high economic value, Ling Yongjian's team has successfully turned stone into gold and achieved the goal of resource recycling. Using green chemistry to solve chemical pollution Investing in green chemistry and promoting the recycling of waste resources were not the main themes of Ling Yongjian's early research. In 1989, after completing his studies in the United States, he returned to Taiwan to teach at National Tsing Hua University. He was engaged in "analytical chemistry" research and often cooperated with organizations such as the Environmental Protection Agency and the Consumers' Foundation. He used mass spectrometry to identify manufacturers who unscrupulously discharged waste and unscrupulous food adulteration companies. However, the closer he got to the front line, the more he could feel the helplessness of manufacturers in waste disposal. Ling Yongjian explained that only specific companies licensed by the Environmental Protection Agency can handle "hazardous industrial waste," but each company has a specific capacity. When a company is unable to handle more waste, semiconductor factories can only temporarily store highly contaminated arsenic waste. If they store too much, they will be fined. There have been cases where a company was ordered to shut down, which in turn affected iPhone shipments. "We not only need to see the problem, but also solve it!" In 2006, Ling Yongjian began to invest in "green chemistry" research, creating a regenerative key for waste treatment. Source: Environmental Information Center
