The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA), Digital Europe, and the Japan Green Procurement Survey Standardization Association (JGPSSI) have jointly announced a new version of the "Joint Industry Guide (JIG-101 Ed. 2.0)". This industry guide provides material declaration information on prohibited substances in relevant electronic products/components and is applicable to all manufacturers in the supply chain.

In the international market, many companies have developed their own prohibited substances programs and standards. This has resulted in numerous documents used to investigate information on such prohibited substances. However, companies, through their own supply chain systems, require suppliers to provide relevant information, leading to suppliers repeatedly performing similar procedures to provide information to their customers. JIG aims to rationalize this process by setting new standards for the presence and content of regulated substances/materials. JIG-101 was published in April 2005. The key points of this revision are as follows:

It incorporates battery regulations and includes specific usage limits.
A report is only required when regulations explicitly require the restricted substance to be used for a specific purpose.
JIG must declare that the list of substances will be continuously updated in accordance with regulations, such as adding substances like fluorinated greenhouse gases, formaldehyde, perchlorates, and perfluorooctane sulfonate.
The revised classification, which uses three criteria to declare restricted substances, replaces the previous Level A and Level B. Both the old JIG-101 and the revised JIG-101A classified the investigated substances as Level A and Level B.
All substances requiring declaration are listed in Table A. Criteria 1 – R (as required by regulations; 28 (35 classes) of substances are listed), Criteria 2 – A (for evaluation purposes only; 1 class of substances is listed), and Criteria 3 – I (for informational purposes only; 3 classes of substances are listed).
The EU REACH Regulation came into effect on June 1, 2007. Articles 7.2 (Notification) and 33 (Information Transmission) relate to electronic products, both requiring manufacturers to know whether their products contain greater than 0.1% (by weight) of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs). To meet these requirements, this guideline establishes a screening process to assist manufacturers in their review. This method allows JIG users to proactively comply with the REACH Regulation in the future.
