Japanese laundry responds to SDGs: abandoning disposable plastic and reflecting on the relationship between people and the environment

  • 2021-10-07

"We don't provide customers with (plastic) hangers or dust covers," Ishihara Laundry in Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, told the public welfare group "SDGs-log." This is part of the shop's commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Some might be skeptical, thinking it's common sense for a laundry to provide dust covers when delivering items. Wouldn't not providing them affect competitiveness? Ishihara Laundry, however, asked customers to save these and donate the equivalent cost to disaster victims. "And everyone agreed." Thus, small individual actions have created a win-win situation for both environmental protection and charity. Ishihara Laundry has other ways of engaging customers in environmental initiatives. They've established a "Button Bank," where customers can leave spare buttons at home and keep them organized. If a button falls off a customer's clothing, they can replace it with a button from the customer's clothes. "We hope to reduce carbon emissions and plastic waste in the ocean." This small gesture makes everyone feel they can help. As an eco-friendly laundry, wastewater obviously impacts the environment. Naturally, Ishihara Laundry also chooses relatively eco-friendly detergents, such as soaps with simpler molecular structures than synthetic detergents, natural persimmon juice detergents, and "All Things in Nature" detergents, which are advertised as 100% biodegradable and additive-free. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) also include initiatives such as labor and poverty reduction. When selecting detergents, Ishihara Laundry not only chooses recycled soap (soap that is collected and recycled from waste soap) but also selects factories that provide employment to vulnerable groups such as people with disabilities and single mothers. The dryers were also upgraded from open-air to recycling models, reducing organic solvent emissions and increasing detergent recovery rates. "With the current serious problem of marine plastic debris pollution, looking back at the plastic hangers and plastic dust covers I provide to customers every day, and the wastewater from detergent, I feel bad... So I'm thinking about ways to change." Despite being a small shop with only three employees, Ishihara Laundry has seriously reflected on its relationship with the environment.
