Japan's new plastic bag toll system will be rolled out on July 1, and operators will introduce toll paper bags

  • 2020-08-07

In conjunction with the nationwide implementation of a new system charging for plastic shopping bags starting July 1st, Japanese department stores and other businesses will also implement a paper bag charging system, hoping to encourage consumers to prepare their own reusable and environmentally friendly shopping bags.

According to a report by Japan's NHK, a well-known department store chain announced that starting July 1st, it will gradually stop providing plastic shopping bags in its directly operated food sections, replacing them with paper bags for a fee. These paid paper bags are thicker and more durable than the previously free ones, and are also water-repellent. They are priced at 30 yen (approximately NT$8) and 50 yen each, depending on size. Clothing and general merchandise sections will continue to provide free paper bags.

Department store operators say they hope that through these efforts, about 30% of consumers will bring their own reusable shopping bags. Another food retailer, with over 450 branches, stopped providing free shopping bags in April, replacing them with paper bags sold for 15 yen each, urging customers to bring their own reusable bags.
