Non-governmental organizations in EU countries continue to monitor whether products contain substances of very high concern (NSCLC No. 33/2009).

The German environmental organization Friends of the Earth (BUND) has recently been encouraging German consumers to inquire with product suppliers about the presence of Substances of Very High Concern (SVHCs) in their products. This NGO will print nearly 30,000 leaflets to explain to consumers the requirements of Article 33 of the REACH Regulation, which mandates that product suppliers respond within 45 days with sufficient information regarding the presence of any SVHCs in their products. Consumers are also encouraged to inform the relevant manufacturers of any inquiries they receive about SVHC content. These leaflets will be sent to consumers outside of product suppliers and published on BUND's website.

The Czech branch of Friends of the Earth has also sent letters to retailers and several product manufacturers (such as Tesco, IKEA, and Panasonic) inquiring whether their products contain SVHCs. The Czech Environmental Inspectorate (CIZP) planned an activity in 2010 to inquire with retailers about the presence of substances of very high concern in their products.

Earlier this year, a Swedish non-governmental organization (SSNC) tested 27 pairs of plastic shoes from seven different countries (the Philippines, Uganda, Tanzania, India, South Africa, Indonesia, and Sweden) to determine if they contained SVHCs. Seventeen of the 27 pairs of shoes tested positive for one or more plasticizers. Even more concerning, one pair was found to contain DEHP at a concentration as high as 23%. DEHP is listed as an SVHC under the EU REACH regulation due to its reproductive toxicity.
