The European Commission will amend the ELV and RoHS directive exemption projects

  • 2009-11-07

Based on the content of the consultation draft on lead and mercury in automobiles and electrical and electronic products published by the European Commission on June 8, 2009, it is speculated that the European Commission is considering revising the exemption clauses of the Waste Automobile Directive (ELV) and the Waste Electrical and Electronic Products Directive (RoHS).

The first draft for comments addresses 10 exemptions under the existing EU ELV Directive, as well as 2 potential new exemptions. Questions raised include those requested by EU and Asian automotive manufacturers: "Please provide insights or suggestions regarding new restrictions, expiration dates for existing exemptions, and exemptions for lead-containing thermoelectric generators, etc."

In the second consultation draft, the European Commission seeks input from stakeholders regarding new RoHS directive exemptions. One item that may be included in the exemption is lead and cadmium in ceramic tile glazes, as manufacturers claim there are currently no alternatives.

These two draft opinions will be open until August 3rd and will be jointly drafted by the German Oko and Fraunhofer Institutes. The European Commission is expected to announce six new exemptions soon. The incoming Swedish president also hopes to pass the revised RoHS directive on its first reading before the end of this year.
