European Commission research report compares REACH in various countriesPenalties

On December 7, 2009, the European Commission published a preliminary study report on the implementation of the REACH regulation in EU member states, primarily comparing the penalties imposed by each member state for violations of the REACH regulation. The report revealed significant differences among member states in the formulation of their penalties.

The countries with the strictest penalties for violating REACH regulations are the United Kingdom, Belgium, Ireland, Poland, and Portugal. The least stringent countries are Austria, Latvia, Lithuania, Malta, and Romania. The report also concludes that the penalties in these less stringent countries are too lenient and have lost their deterrent effect.
