The EU reiterated that quantitative targets are needed to combat global warming.

  • 2008-03-19

A senior official from the European Commission today reiterated the call for quantifiable targets to effectively combat climate change.

"We hope to structure such discussions...like the ones we have in Europe, with a digitized goal of systematizing emissions reduction," said Jos Delbeke, the EU's Deputy Secretary-General for the Environment.

De Becques made these remarks after attending a symposium in Tokyo with the G20 countries, the world's largest contributors to air pollution. Last week, EU leaders agreed to implement new legislation by March 2009 to achieve the goal of reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 20% by 2020, and to increase the use of green energy within the same target period.

However, de Beek did not express support for Japan's proposed cap on emissions from major polluting industries. He said, "In the EU, we would agree with Japan that different economic sectors will have very different climate change policies. Therefore, a different solution for each economic sector would be useful." (Translated by Central News Agency)
