The largest carbon absorption plant on the surface that permanently stores carbon dioxide opens in Iceland

  • 2021-11-18

The world's first and largest carbon capture and conversion plant, "Orca," opened in Iceland on the 8th. Built by Swiss startup Climeworks AG, the plant aims to reduce the impact of greenhouse gases on the planet and marks a milestone for the direct carbon capture industry. The Orca plant will capture 4,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually and can be permanently stored. Climeworks has built 16 plants in Europe, but Orca is the only one that permanently captures and stores carbon dioxide rather than recycles it. According to Climeworks, the plant has the capacity to capture 4,000 tons of carbon dioxide annually, which will be safely and permanently stored using a chemical process developed by Carbfix, an Icelandic academic and industrial partner. In this process, carbon dioxide captured from the atmosphere is mixed with water and pumped deep underground, where it undergoes a natural mineralization process in less than two years and turns into stone. While the Orca plant will only capture a small portion of the approximately 35 billion tons of carbon dioxide emitted annually globally, Climeworks believes there is an opportunity to scale up carbon removal capacity to millions of tons within a decade. Orca was verified by independent third-party DNV in mid-June 2021, making it the first verified direct atmospheric carbon capture and storage service. A recent report by the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) warned that due to global warming, the world may experience more frequent extreme weather events in the coming years. Experts believe that it is important to significantly reduce greenhouse gas levels and permanently eliminate carbon dioxide emissions from the atmosphere. Industry players say carbon capture technology can be replicated globally, but climate experts have doubts. Construction of the Orca plant began in May 2020 and is based on advanced modular technology. Climateworks explained that Orca is made up of multiple innovative container-sized air collectors stacked together. Strategically located next to ON Power's Hellisheiði geothermal power plant, Orca operates entirely on renewable energy. "This gives Orca the opportunity to start operating within 15 months. Compared to the previous generation of technology, the amount of steel used in each collector is reduced by about half," the company's statement said. Climeworks said that as long as there is sufficient renewable energy and storage conditions, the technology can be easily replicated on a larger scale around the world. Climeworks said that its advanced technology has been optimized, and the carbon dioxide capture capacity of each module is higher than in the past, helping the plant achieve unprecedented carbon storage capacity. The innovative design of the plant can help expand this climate technology in the coming years and significantly increase its capture capacity. Although investment is pouring into various carbon capture solution companies, climate experts still emphasize that these technologies are not without shortcomings and believe that all parties are "overly optimistic" about these technologies. Climeworks co-founder and CEO Christoph Gebald pointed out in a statement: "There is still a long way to go to achieve global net zero emissions, but with Orca, we believe Climeworks has taken an important step towards achieving this goal."
