Europe may impose heavy penalties on the automotive industry for failing to reduce carbon emissions.

  • 2012-01-05

The European Environment Agency (EEA) said today that a few automakers that have failed to meet European carbon emission targets could face fines of €10 billion ($13 billion) in 2012.

The European Environment Agency stated: "If car manufacturers do not further improve the carbon efficiency of new cars between 2010 and 2012, non-compliant manufacturers will face fines totaling €10 billion."

Major automakers could face penalties if they fail to meet mandates to reduce carbon dioxide emissions.

The overall emissions target for the automotive industry is 130 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer per new passenger vehicle. Under this common goal, manufacturers set their own targets based on the average emissions of their various vehicle models.

Starting in 2012, car manufacturers were required to ensure that 65% of new cars registered with the European Union (EU) met this target. The threshold was raised to 75% in 2013, then to 80% in 2014 and 100% in 2015.

The European Environment Agency stated in its report that 80% of the new vehicle registrations of 32 car manufacturers in 2010 met the 2012 target.
