Sweden reports products exceeding RoHS standards

  • 2013-09-12

Recently, Sweden notified other member states of a RoHS non-compliant product through the EU's Rapid Alert System for Non-Food Consumer Products (RAPEX) to alert them to take action. The toy walkie-talkie's solder contained 54.6% lead, failing to meet the requirements of the RoHS Directive (Directive 2011/65/EU), thus requiring the manufacturer to recall the product from the market.

Furthermore, the plastic bag of this product contains up to 2.3% di-2-ethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP). According to REACH regulations, DEHP, DBP, and BBP are prohibited in all toys and children's products, while DINP, DIDP, and DNOP are prohibited in toys or childcare products that children may put in their mouths. In addition, the plastic bag also contains up to 5.7% short-chain chlorinated paraffins (SCCP), thus the environmental risks posed by this product do not comply with EU regulations – Persistent Organic Pollutants (Regulation 519/2012).

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are chemical substances synthesized by humans that persist in the environment and accumulate through the food chain (bioaccumulation), thereby causing harm to the environment and human health.
