The U.S. Plastics Pact releases four key points in its 2025 roadmap to ensure all plastic packaging is reusable, recycled and compostable

  • 2021-07-22

As partners of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Global Plastics Pact Network, The Recycling Partnership and the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) designed and officially launched the U.S. Plastics Pact in August 2020, aiming to make all plastic packaging reusable, recyclable, and compostable by 2025. To ensure systemic change and accelerate progress on the Pact, the U.S. Plastics Pact’s “Roadmap to 2025” proposes four key points to be agreed upon by 2025 to help U.S. industry leaders take action on the significant systemic changes needed to achieve a circular economy for plastics by 2025: Define a list of problematic or unnecessary packaging by 2021 and take steps to phase them out by 2025; Ensure 100% of plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable, or compostable; Take action and effectively recycle or compost 50% of plastic packaging; and Ensure an average recycled content or bio-based content of 30% in plastic packaging. Based on The Recycling Partnership, the U.S. Plastics Pact’s “Roadmap to 2025” follows the precedent set by other pacts in the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Global Plastics Pact Network, hoping to jointly implement plastic packaging guidelines, policies, education, labeling, assessments, and infrastructure. Unlike existing U.S. initiatives, the U.S. Plastics Pact measures progress and advances shared goals through annual reporting, and coordinates the development of a national strategy to provide primary leadership and accountability. Meanwhile, Sarah Dearman, Vice President of Circular Ventures at The Recycling Partnership, said: "The roadmap is an important step in driving change in the U.S. packaging recycling system."
