US carbon emissions have risen again.

  • 2010-03-12

As official reports warned that carbon emissions would rise again this year, pressure on the U.S. government to pass legislation to curb greenhouse gas emissions continued to increase.

A recent Short-Term Energy Outlook report from the U.S. Energy Information Administration indicates that economic recovery means carbon emissions will exceed the records of the past two years, making it more difficult for the U.S. to achieve its goal of reducing total carbon emissions to 83% of the 2005 baseline year by 2020.

The report, which includes monthly carbon emission forecasts, found that the U.S. carbon reduction for last year was 6.1%, lower than the expected 11% reduction baseline. The report points out that the economic downturn has impacted industrial energy demand, and changes in electricity usage are one of the main reasons for the decrease in carbon emissions.

However, the report anticipates that the economic recovery will result in a 1.5% growth rate in carbon emissions this year.
