U.S. Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act No. 41/2008

  • 2008-12-24

On August 14, 2008, U.S. President George W. Bush signed the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008 (CPSIA). This act authorized and expanded the powers of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to prevent unsafe products from entering the United States, thereby addressing the shortcomings of existing U.S. consumer product safety laws.

Key points of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act

The sale of any product targeted at children aged 12 or under, or containing lead exceeding the prescribed limits, is prohibited. The upper limit for lead content is implemented in phases. From February 10, 2009, the upper limit for lead content was 600 ppm. In the second phase, from August 14, 2009, the allowable limit was changed to 300 ppm. Three years later, on August 14, 2011, the allowable limit was changed to 100 ppm.
The upper limit for lead content in the paint of furniture, toys and other children's products will be reduced from the current 0.06% to 0.009% by weight, effective August 14, 2009.

**Mandatory Third-Party Testing Requirements for Specific Products** As required by this Act or other Act enforced by the Commission, all manufacturers must demonstrate that their products comply with applicable regulations, prohibitions, standards, or regulations, specifying the applicable regulations, prohibitions, standards, or regulations. For specific products, third-party testing certification is mandatory. Third-party conformity assessment body certification must be conducted by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) or its designated independent certification bodies. **SGS is a CPSC-accredited third-party testing organization that provides a wide range of services, including analysis and consulting, on heavy metals and phthalates in toys and children's products.** For more information, please contact our customer service team by letter or phone.
