The US CPSC excludes testing requirements for untreated wood in toys.

  • 2016-10-06

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced its final decision on the Toy Directive, excluding the requirement for reporting heavy metals in toys made from unprocessed or unpainted wood.

This amendment to the regulation is based on the premise that unprocessed or unpainted tree trunks are unlikely to contain heavy metals exceeding the limits set by the Consumer Safety Specifications for Toy Safety (ASTM F963-11). Therefore, the decision removes the requirement for mandatory third-party certified heavy metal content testing reports for unprocessed or unpainted wood in toys.

The aforementioned consumer safety regulations stipulate that toys that can be put in the mouth to be sucked, licked, or ingested must meet the limits for the solubility of eight heavy metals in their surface coatings and accessible substrates. Product manufacturers are also required to obtain a conformity certificate from a third-party certified public institution.

The permissible solubility of heavy metal elements required by the Toy Safety Directive's Consumer Safety Standard is as follows:

1.          銻 Antimony,Sb – 60 ppm;

2.          砷 Arsenic,As – 25 ppm;

3.          鋇 Barium,Ba – 1000 ppm;

4.          鎘 Cadmium,Cd – 75 ppm;

5.          鉻 Chromium,Cr – 60 ppm;

6.          鉛 Lead,Pb – 90 ppm;

7.          汞 Mercury,Hg – 60 ppm;

8.          硒 Selenium,Se – 500 ppm。
