BSI launches the world's first circular economy standard

BSI Launches World's First Circular Economy Standard As the Earth's finite resources dwindle and climate change intensifies, the European Union is actively promoting a circular economy, hoping to achieve the UN Sustainable Development Goals through sustainable production and consumption. Recognizing that despite the efforts of numerous international NGOs promoting the circular economy, businesses and consumers, even those aware of its purpose, often lack understanding of its complex technical and theoretical definitions, the British Standards Institute (BSI), with assistance from the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) and the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA), invited experts from several organizations—including the Ellen MacArthur Foundation (EMF), the Waste and Resource Action Programme (WRAP), and the Centre for Sustainable Design at the University for the Creative Arts—to form a standards committee. This committee discussed how to use a practical framework to guide businesses in simplifying and identifying circular economy opportunities relevant to their operations. Following numerous consultations and discussions with stakeholders, BSI launched BS 8001:2017, the world's first standard related to the circular economy, in May of this year (2017). This framework standard provides practical guidance for businesses of all types, industries, sizes, and regions, helping them to gain a deeper understanding of the circular economy concept or to further implement circular economy strategies within their organizations. The standard defines six principles of the circular economy as follows: 1. Systems thinking – A comprehensive understanding of the impact of business activities on the system; 2. Innovation – Rethinking the value that resource management can create; 3. Stewardship – Businesses must be responsible for the ripple effects of their choices and activities; 4. Collaboration – Ensuring the effectiveness of the entire system through collaboration; 5. Value optimization – Ensuring that all materials retain their highest value and function; 6. Transparency – Maintaining an open and honest attitude towards the limitations and benefits of circularity. BSI states that BS 8001:2017 is a comprehensive and practical guideline, and highly flexible. It provides ample information for businesses new to the circular economy, while also offering existing circular economy practices an opportunity for self-reflection and further case studies.
