The EU RoHS Directive will regulate the use of decabromodiphenyl ether.

  • 2008-05-02

The EU RoHS Directive will regulate the use of decabromodiphenyl ether.

On April 7, 2008, the European Court of Justice announced the joint ruling by the Danish government and the European Parliament regarding the European Commission's application concerning decabromodiphenyl ether (deca-BDE). Deca-BDE is a flame retardant primarily used in electronic devices such as televisions, computers, and kitchen appliances for fire protection.

The European Court of Justice upheld the proposal by Denmark and the European Parliament to ban the use of decabromodiphenyl ether (deca-BDE) in electrical and electronic equipment, effectively removing the exemption for deca-BDE previously granted in the EU RoHS Directive. Therefore, from July 1, 2008, electrical and electronic equipment manufactured and sold within the EU must not use this environmentally harmful chemical.

The attached document contains the contents of the European Court of Justice's judgment.
