Taiwan's first offshore wind farm begins trial operation; first turbine in the second phase of offshore wind power begins generating electricity.

  • 2019-11-14

Taiwan's first commercial-scale offshore wind farm, Formosa 1, announced today (9th) that the first wind turbine of the second phase of the project had started power generation trial operation last Thursday (September 5th). The second phase has a total of 20 wind turbines, which are expected to be put into trial operation in the next two months to warm up for the official commercial operation at the end of the year. The second phase of Formosa 1 has a total of 20 wind turbines, which have entered the trial operation stage one after another. Image source: Formosa 1 Formosa 1 is located about 2-6 kilometers off the coast of Miaoli County in northwest Taiwan. It has a total of 22 wind turbines and is constructed in two phases. The first phase installed two 4MW wind turbines with a total capacity of 8MW. The installation was completed in October 2016 and commercial operation was completed in April 2017. The second phase installed 20 6MW wind turbines with a total capacity of 120MW and construction started in May this year. Formosa 1 is expected to be completed before the end of the year with a total installed capacity of 128MW. The electricity produced can be used by 128,000 households annually. Ocean Wind Power stated that of the 20 wind turbines in the second phase, 10 have been installed, and 6 have entered the commissioning phase. Commissioning is the final step before the completion of an offshore wind farm. Each turbine must complete a 10-14-day power generation test. Once all functions are normal during the test, it can be prepared for commercial operation. Taiwan's offshore wind power industry adopts a three-phase strategy: "demonstration first, potential second, and then block-level development." Ocean Wind Power is a demonstration wind farm in the first phase. Upon completion by the end of the year, Taiwan's offshore wind power industry will advance from its current two turbines to a complete wind farm, making this commissioning phase of significant significance. Matthias Bausenwein, Chairman of Ocean Wind Power and President of Ørsted Energy Asia Pacific and Chairman of Ørsted Energy Taiwan, stated that the commencement of power generation from the second phase of Ocean Wind Power is the final milestone before the farm's completion and is the culmination of the joint efforts of the engineering team and all partners. Ørsted and its joint venture partners, JERA, Macquarie Capital, and Swansea, are committed to completing Taiwan's first demonstration wind farm on schedule and to quality. The offshore wind power project is a joint investment by Ørsted (35%), JERA (32.5%), Macquarie Capital (25%), and Swancor (7.5%). The second phase, "potential sites," has selected 5.5GW through a selection and bidding process, with construction expected to begin next year and completion anticipated by the end of 2025. The third phase, "block development," is expected to involve 5GW, but the selection method has not yet been announced. Source: Environmental Information Center (2019/09/09)
