British manufacturer fined for violating WEEE regulations

2010-03-12

Sita Metal Recycling, a UK company, has been fined £4,000 by the Environment Agency for violating WEEE regulations, and the UK Department for Environment, Labour and Welfare has charged the company with two offenses:

Between July 1, 2007 and December 31, 2008, this company shipped approximately 1,967 tons of processed WEEE overseas without approval; and
This company had already begun processing WEEE before obtaining a qualified treatment plant in April 2008.

The UK's WEEE (Weather-Electrical Engineering and Materials) regulations came into effect on January 2, 2007, to ensure the safe recycling or disposal of electronic and electrical products and components recovered from the market. These regulations also require companies to record or declare the types of materials they recycle or reuse. Companies handling or exporting WEEE must be approved by the UK Environment Agency.
