Walmart launches sustainable leadership e-commerce store

Walmart launched the Sustainability Leaders Shop yesterday (February 24), offering green consumers a wider range of product choices. This shop is also one of the ways Walmart communicates its Sustainability Index to consumers.

Walmart's Sustainability Metrics were developed in 2009 in partnership with The Sustainability Consortium (TSC). This set of metrics is used to evaluate the overall performance of supplier companies, rather than individual products, and includes environmental and social aspects. Prior to this, the metrics were only used for Walmart's supply chain management; however, through the establishment of the Sustainability Leaders Mall, Walmart's Sustainability Metrics have become a standard for identifying whether suppliers are fulfilling their corporate social responsibility in both environmental and social aspects.

Products listed on the Sustainability Leaders Mall will display a special logo on their photos. Compared to other manufacturers of similar products, those manufacturers that receive the Sustainability Leaders logo have achieved the highest sustainability score or at least 80 points (out of 100). However, the Sustainability Leaders logo is an affirmation of the manufacturer's sustainability efforts and does not imply that their products are more environmentally friendly than other similar products.
