US energy-efficient building program saves $1 billion in 2 years

  • 2015-09-29

The White House Better Buildings Challenge, launched in 2011, had 250 public and private sector entities participating by 2014, covering 32,000 buildings and saving $1 billion in energy costs between 2012 and 2014.

The "Optimize Building Challenge," supported by President Obama and former President Clinton, aims to attract public and private sector entities across the United States to improve building energy efficiency directly from the supply side of the building market through government subsidies and technology exchange, with the goal of achieving 20% energy savings within 10 years.

Statistics show that the average return on investment for upgrading lighting control systems is 41%, while the return on investment for building automation and control systems is as high as 44%.

Furthermore, in May of this year (2015), the U.S. Department of Energy announced the establishment of the "Optimizing Buildings Seminar Center" as a platform for exchanging financing information and technologies among participating organizations. Energy experts stated that while government-enacted environmental laws or green standards can indeed improve energy efficiency to some extent, the most effective approach is to directly finance and sponsor the development of the green building market.
