Walmart announces plans to further reduce harmful substances in products

  • 2017-10-06

Walmart announces that it will further reduce harmful substances in its products Walmart announced that it will further reduce 1% weight percent of high priority chemicals (HPCs) in its entire product. Walmart, a US retail giant, announced the development in its 2017 Global Responsibility Report listing its policies and efforts to use sustainable chemicals in its consumer products. Since 2103, Walmart has been asking direct suppliers to reduce or avoid the use of chemicals of concern in personal cleaning products, paper products, cleaning products, pet and baby products, with as many as 90,000 affected products from more than 700 suppliers. In 2016, Walmart further announced a 95% reduction in HPCs, followed by and published 8 chemicals of concern: – Toluene; – Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP); – Diethyl Phthalate (DEP); – Nonylphenol isopropoxylates (NPEs, containing 9 different Cas–butyric acid numbers);–Hydroxybenzoate; Propylparaben;and –triclosan (in addition to becoming the main ingredient with curative effects through the FDA novel agent application process). Although Walmart refuses to publicly explain 96% of the calculation, the Director of Hazardous Substances Data Collection noted that while calculating Hazardous Substances Reduction, Walmart requires its suppliers to provide much corroborating information about hazardous substances.
