EDF, known for its nuclear power, is sprinting into the distributed renewable energy market in the United States.

  • 2020-08-07

France has the highest proportion of nuclear energy in the world, and EDF is therefore known for operating nuclear power. However, EDF's foray into the US market is focused on renewable energy. EDF Renewables North America has a considerable number of centralized wind and solar power plants, and now it wants to go a step further and develop the distributed renewable energy market.

The US renewable energy market is currently divided into two main sectors: centralized large-scale wind and solar power plants, and distributed small and medium-sized wind and solar power plants for residential or commercial use. EDF initially focused on the centralized market in the US, but its foray into the distributed market has also yielded some success, with its distributed solutions division achieving an installed capacity of 100 megawatts in 2019.

EDF (Électricité de France) is targeting the commercial market. More and more American companies are now opting for their own green energy sources, partly to maintain their corporate image, and partly to mitigate risk and avoid being controlled by power companies. This trend is increasingly driven by the need to build their own renewable energy systems combined with energy storage. Distributed energy has now transformed from a money-losing proposition into a profit center. Previously, distributed energy was merely a theory, and many initial projects were experimental. However, the active entry of large players like EDF into the market signifies the arrival of the true takeoff opportunity for the distributed energy market.
