SAC Releases New Higg Module Tool to Reduce Product Environmental Impact

SAC Launches New Higg Module Tool to Reduce Environmental Impact of Products. The Sustainable Apparel Coalition (SAC) is a multi-stakeholder group comprised of leading global apparel industry players, including brands, retailers, manufacturers, governments, NGOs, and academic experts. Representing over 40% of the global apparel and footwear market, SAC is committed to reducing the environmental and social impact of apparel and footwear worldwide. In 2012, SAC launched the Higg Index, a product sustainability measurement tool developed based on existing assessment tools—the Outdoor Industries Association's Eco Index and Nike's Material Assessment Tool. Using the Higg Index, companies can identify opportunities to reduce negative environmental impacts and achieve long-term sustainability through supply chain improvements. SAC recently launched the Higg Index Design and Development Module (DDM), which, combined with the newly released Higg Materials Sustainability Index (Higg MSI) last month, forms a cradle-to-door product scoring tool. DDM (Digital Product Management) can calculate the environmental performance of thousands of products used in apparel, footwear, and home textiles, helping designers and developers choose sustainable options with less environmental impact from the earliest stages of product development. The CEO of SAC (Social Products and Accessories Council) points out that the material and manufacturing process choices made by designers during product development can influence over 80% of the final product's environmental impact. Therefore, providing reliable environmental impact information to designers and product developers can maximize environmental performance. After designers complete a product evaluation form, Higg DDM calculates a design score. By changing material choices or design concepts, DDM generates different data, providing designers with information on the environmental impact of their concept products. Higg DDM also has built-in product and industry baselines, allowing SAC members to compare their products with similar existing products in the industry during the product development stage and receive rapid feedback on environmental performance improvements. SAC has developed various online tools that allow members to assess and improve the negative environmental impact at every stage of the product lifecycle, aiming to green the apparel, footwear, and home textile industries and work together for environmental sustainability.
