The Battery Directive 2006\/66\/EC, which came into effect on September 26, 2006, applies to batteries\/accumulators sold in all markets. Member States were required to transpose this directive into their domestic law by September 26, 2008. The EU updated its Q&A in April 2008 and will continue to update it periodically thereafter.

<\/a>Preventive measures in the directive<\/strong>
This directive restricts the use of mercury in all batteries.<\/br> The use of cadmium in portable batteries is also restricted, but portable batteries used in emergency and alarm systems are excluded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Battery collection regulations<\/strong><\/td><\/tr>
The Battery Directive aims to collect large quantities of discarded batteries\/storage units.<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Consumers should bring their discarded portable batteries back to the collection point free of charge and without needing to purchase new batteries.<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Wholesalers should collect used batteries when selling them.<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Industrial battery manufacturers have a responsibility to collect industrial batteries from end users.<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td><\/tr>
\"\"<\/td>Vehicle battery manufacturers should establish collection programs for discarded vehicle batteries that are not collected under the ELV Directive.<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Battery Recycling and Disposal Regulations.
<\/strong> All collected batteries must be recycled. However, Member States may dispose of waste batteries containing mercury, cadmium, or lead by landfill in the following two circumstances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"\"<\/td>The national strategy for phasing out heavy metals following impact assessments is to replace recycling with landfill disposal.<\/td><\/tr>
