By mid-century, atmospheric carbon dioxide concentrations are projected to reach approximately 550 ppm (0.055%) due to human activities, compared to the current 400 ppm (0.04%). Since humans obtain most of their nutrition from food, the study, published on August 27th in the journal *Nature Climate Change*, shows that researchers predict 175 million people will be zinc deficient and 122 million will be protein deficient by then. Currently, it is estimated that over 2 billion people are already deficient in at least one nutrient, and climate change will increase the global prevalence of malnutrition. Researchers say India will be the most affected region, followed by countries in South Asia, Southeast Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.
