Tetra Pak, Taiwan’s first grown carton, joins hands with Yimei to make food packaging materials more sustainable

  • 2021-10-07

To protect the food and block sunlight, most food packaging cartons are coated with a layer of plastic. However, petrochemicals aren't the only option for this plastic these days. Taiwan's first "recyclable bioplastic" all-plant box, a collaboration between Tetra Pak Taiwan and I-Mei Foods, utilizes both Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)-labeled paper and 100% recycled plant-based polyethylene (PE) with the Bonsucro Sugarcane Sustainability Certification seal. This ensures consumers enjoy a fresh drink and can recycle it by recycling it as they normally would. These efforts have earned Tetra Pak a spot among the world's top 50 sustainability and climate leaders. The Secrets of Paper Containers: Certified Pulp and Sugar Glue Emerge. I-Mei launched this fresh milk in October 2019, using Tetra Pak's all-plant box. A small leaf embossed on the bottle cap quietly identifies it as a plant-based product—even the bottle cap is grown. Because paper containers hold beverages, soups, and other ingredients, they must be waterproof, heat-insulating, and even sunlight-blocking. Therefore, the inner layer is often insulated with multiple layers of plastic film or aluminum foil, which distinguishes paper containers from other paper recycling categories. Paper containers are not simply paper, but a composite material. Traditionally, this layer of glue was made from petrochemicals, but in recent years, plant-based glues such as soy, corn, and grass have been added. Tetra Pak and I-Mei have jointly launched this all-vegetarian box, with cardboard sourced from FSC™-certified forests and a film made from 100% plant-based polyethylene (PE) sourced from Bonsucro-certified sugarcane. "These are all sustainable, sustainable raw materials, and their sources are traceable," said Huang Su-chiu, Assistant Manager of Corporate Communications at Tetra Pak Taiwan.
